Permaburn Directions

Word document version hereA.K.A. BADASS!

Go to Reno. Take 395 north past Susanville. It is ok to bypass Susanville to save about 10 miles on the trip. About 60 miles north of Susanville is Madeline, CA Population 60 (41 3'5”, 120o 28' 30”).

From here you are 11.1 miles away.

Town of Madeline

Go 6 miles north of Madeline on 395 to the 134.92 mile marker. Take a left on the shortcut to a gravel road. Take another left to go south on this gravel road (graded and maintained 30' width)

41 7'43” 120 30'0”

From here you are 5.1 miles away.

Go 0.1 miles till you reach the green gate. Open the gate if you have to.

41 7'37” 120 30'0”

From here you are 5.0 miles away.

Go 0.4 miles until you see a second green Gate on the right.

Open the green gate and take a right. There will be a yellow cattle guard about 30 feet beyond the gate.

This is the way that you go. 10' graded sometimes rocked road. This road is blinded by the sun at sunset, so be careful.

41 7'20” 120 29'54”

From here you are 4.6 miles away.

Second green gate to the right.

Yellow cattle guard.

2.4 miles until you see another yellow cattle guard. To the right, will be a sign for the reservoir. You want to go just beyond the gate, and then take a left turn on the dirt road.

8 foot dirt road, light grade, sometimes rocky and rough. Be careful.

From here you are 2.2 miles away.

41 6'45” 120 32' 6”

The cattle gard you want to find! Turn left just after it.

A sign that is to the right.

I said turn left.

Turn left just after, not before!

There you go!

Go 2.2 miles south on the dirt road. At some points the road tilts pretty bad, and there are a few rocks protruding. I made it with my Chevy Van that had ground effects, so I think that most cars and trucks can make it.

You will reach a small hill and then come down. There are two ponds that identify the spot. The ponds are about 1/3 of the way in from the northwest corner of the property.

Keep going...

This is about where the line of the property is. Just over the hill is the ponds, and the flat section.

Permaburn: Looking south-east from a small hill by the ponds.

Permaburn: the dried up western pond at dawn.

Permaburn: The cold icy muddy water of the eastern pond.

Other notes:

The ashes from the first burn. Don't cry. There will be many more!

At Permaburn: Looking west during the sun rise.

There is a dirt road before the first one that technically should get you to the south part of the property, but actually lets you overlook the property. There is a weather station on this road.

If you see this, you are on the wrong road. Go back where you came from before the rocks eat your ride!

Ok, so you didn't listen. You kept going forward and took a right and are battling 2 foot boulders on the road. Well, here is the view of the permaburn-land from the south east corner.
Good luck getting back.

There is a southern access that is quicker to get to, but it is advisable only for dirt bikes right now- the grade is too high and the rocks are too big. However, there are many pre-cut trees there that could be used for firewood.

The south route that was too hard to cross.

Dead trees on the south route.

More dead trees.

This is where I got stuck on the southern road. Not good.

Good luck, I hpe you find it OK!
